Dansk: Marstrand var på udlandsrejse 1845-1848 og oplevede den stigende uro blandt landbefolkningen i Italien. Motivet er fra 1847, men han færdiggjorde først billedet i 1850 efter sin hjemkomst.
English: Marstrand was abroad in 1845-1848 and experienced the growing unrest of the rural Italian populace. He drafted this in 1847, but the final painting was made back in Denmark in 1850.
