DescriptionWheel-of-life-mother-nature-forrer-french-c1400.jpg |
English: This pen drawing on parchment, 69.0 cm x 56.5 cm (27.2 in x 22.2 in), has verses in Old French and was formerly in the collection of Robert Forrer. It was auctioned in 1911 but its current location is unknown. The title is La Ro[u]e de Mere Nature, Sa Ceste Pourtraiture, (The Wheel of Mother Nature: This is Her Image). Mother Nature is at the bottom, a young woman with long blond hair, standing on a flowered hillock. Naked from the waist up, she wears a blue pleated skirt and white gloves, and holds the wheel overhead. It is a Wheel of Life, from infancy to old age, showing the seven Ages of Man and Death, a skeletal reaper. The word generatio is written by her right hand, below the child, indicating the rising side of the wheel, while corruptio is written by her left hand, beneath Death and referring to the declining side. The seven canonical hours are written around the rim of the wheel. Between the eight spokes of the wheel are questions in verse, which are answered in the quatrains on either side of the wheel. The four figures in the corners of the page are each associated with a 12-line text. Atop the wheel is a striking allegory of Time, a winged woman with three faces, wearing a blue dress. Her faces are labeled Past, Present, and Future. Her four wings are the seasons, with the months as feathers. She pours the sands of time from two vials. The outpouring on the left is labeled Day, Douceur a ceulx chy je abandone, while the right is labeled Night, Amertune a ceux chy je donne. |
