Western Hotel 1902 Eureka, California

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Italianate Western Hotel, 1st & D Streets, Eureka, California in a photograph from around 1902-1910.
  • All visible people on the street are male; women appear in the windows.
  • Both electrical or telegraph wires are present. Street is paved. The hanging arc lamp provided electrical illumination and the poles and wires show that this area was on the telegraph. Particularly modern is the flush level corner above drains for rainwater. Notice the bicycle, the car and the horse cart as modes of transport and the railroad tracks in the street.
  • The hotel itself was built of redwood timber surmounted by ornate wooden “bookwork” as well as wrought iron railings and large, rolled glass windows. All the glass would have been shipped to Eureka.
  • The Humboldt Times, 12, July 1921 reports F.E. Peaslack and Oscar Johnson, proprietors of the Western Hotel were arrested for serving alcohol during Prohibition. This image cannot be from after 1922, because the hotel changed hands and name to “The Monte Carlo Hotel.”
  • Located within the current Eureka Historic District, this hotel was demolished and the location is presently a parking lot.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 91001523.
