| Description |
This sign has adorned the southern end of the Strip since the 1950s. This sign, initially in the middle of nowhere, used to be the first thing that a motorist arriving from California would see; Las Vegas Blvd. (The Strip) was actually a southward extension of downtown's Fifth Street, extending to Route 66 in Barstow and on to Los Angeles. Once Interstate 15 was put in, a ramp allowed motorists coming in from California to get off the freeway and enter the Strip right here. Now, that ramp is history as well, and with the booming population in the area, there are plenty of developments stretching south for miles. In the background is Mandalay Bay, the southernmost hotel/resort on the Las Vegas Strip. It occupies the site of the Hacienda. It is not possible to build new resorts south of Mandalay Bay as they would interfere with air traffic at McCarran Airport, which is right behind my right shoulder. |
