from Harvardin 1755, studied law, and was admitted to the bar three3ears later. In 1764 he married Abigail Smith, daughterof the Pastor of the Congregational Church at Weymouth,;i half a dozen miles away, the site of the parsonage a longstones throw from the North Weymouth Railroad Sta-tion. A part of this old parsonage still stands in NorthWeymouth Village. Parson Smith had told his threedaughters that when they married he would preach foreach a sermon from a text chosen by themselves. The hus-bands choice of Mary (Polly) pleased him.; therefore hewas glad to use the text, Mary hath chosen that goodpart. But Abigails consent to marry John Adams was byno means pleasing to her parson father—too much socialstep down for family pride. Therefore, the Parsons stren-uous objection to her chosen wedding text, John cameneither eating nor drinking and they say he hath a devil.HoAvever, Abigail stuck to her text, her father preachedfrom it, and neighborhood gossips had something to talkabout.
