Maximil-ians, who was then Governor of the Austro-Italian provinces, and later became Emperorof Mexico. Wagner was a lonely exile; Max-imilian apparently the favourite of fortune.Yet compare their ultimate fates—the bril-liant career which the future had in store forWagner with the tragic death of Maximilianin Mexico! Often while in Venice Wagner felt the pinchof poverty. Once he even was obliged topawn the only three valuables he possessed—a silver snuff-box, which had been presentedto him by the Grand Duke of Weimar; abonbonniere, the gift of the Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein, and his watch. Text Appearing After Image:
Richard Wagner From a photograph especially taken forMathilde Wesendonk A LONELY EXILE IN VENICE The journals which Wagner kept in Venicemirror his life, his thoughts—secrets of hissoul that move us profoundly as we con-template this great genius, alone, forsaken, going his solitary way, stealing like a shadowamid relics of former greatness, gliding likea spirit over the melancholy lagoons. Hereare memories; protests— you are resigned, calm—heartbreaking realisations of thepresent; cries of revolt against a conventionalworld, where only the most commonplaceseems bent on enjoying existence; plaintivenotes of resignation; resolves to resume workon Tristan ; philosophical reflections; pre-monitions that he and his Isolde shall meetagain, like spirits once more driftingtoward the spot where they have suffered ;but always—always—the communings of astricken soul with the one being who can bringconsolation.
