Description

Figure
Sakyamuni Buddha
Unknown
China
15th century
Gilt bronze

Buddhism originated amongst the followers of an Indian prince who lived around the year 500 BC, and who renounced his position to lead a holy and monastic life. Thus the first Buddha was a real person, and his teachings were the basis for many later holy texts. This early 15th century gilt bronze figure is an image of the founder of Buddhism, called Sakyamuni Buddha in Sanskrit. It is shown seated in the lotus position on a lotus throne, with hands in the gesture of 'calling the earth to witness'. This refers to the climactic event of the prince's life. Just before he achieved Enlightenment and became Buddha he was tempted by the goddess of evil. He resisted her lures, and called on the earth goddess to witness his resistance.

Many different schools of Buddhism developed in both India and China, and many different aspects of the Buddha were created in sculpture and painting. Each Buddha had special powers, and was prayed to according to need.
