Almond blossom (detail), 1890 On 31 January 1890 Vincent's brother Theo wrote to Vincent that he and his wife got a son and they would name him 'Vincent Willem'. Vincent van Gogh painted this work of one of his favourite subjects - big flowering branches against a blue sky - as a present to hang above Theo and his wife's bed. As a symbol of the young life Vincent chose the branches of an almond tree, one of the earliest flowering trees in sunny southern France that announces spring as early as February. Op 31 januari 1890 schreef Theo van Gogh in een brief aan zijn broer Vincent dat hij een zoon had gekregen die hij de naam Vincent Willem zou geven. Vincent, die een hechte band had met zijn jongere broer, schilderde spoedig nadat hij het blijde bericht had ontvangen, als cadeau een van zijn lievelingsonderwerpen: grote, bloeiende takken tegen een blauwe lucht, bedoeld voor boven het bed van zijn broer en diens vrouw. Als symbool voor het jonge leven koos Vincent de takken van de amandelboom, één van de vroegst bloeiende bomen die in het zonnige zuiden reeds in februari de lente aankondigen.
