| Description |
English: A view over Viola Park, one of Buffalo, New York's famed "residential parks" which lies within the locally- and NRHP-listed Hamlin Park Historic District on the city's East Side, as seen in December 2021. Among the first sections of the district to be developed, this plot of land once belonged to August Hager, a Bavarian-born retired grocer and former Parks Commissioner turned gentleman farmer, who in the early 1890s divided his farmland into lots with streets named after his favorite flowers (for instance, Pansy and Daisy Place lie on the west and east ends of the park, respectively). Note the wide setbacks between houses and street, a conscious attempt by Hager to incorporate a natural element into the urban landscape. |
