Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sentry beside a ruined churchyard, Northern France, during World War I. In this photograph, a British sentry stands on guard beside two brick pillars from which hang the tangled remains of an iron gate. The caption shows that this was all that was left of the churchyard gate. A cross stands among the overgrown graveyard.

This is a reminder of how much was destroyed in the French villages and towns. The effect of this destruction was devastating to the local population, but considering the scale of the conflict and the number of lives lost, the actual areas of land involved was very small.
[Original reads: 'The village churchyard gate in Northern France.']
