Summary[edit]

Description
English: Village Hall, 571 Main Street at Paine Street, East Aurora, New York, August 2022. A 1929 work of the Buffalo-based architectural firm of North & Shelgren, the Colonial Revival style is exemplified here in restrained form through Classical detailing that's most evident in the stone surround that frames the corner entrance, and especially so in the second-floor window above the door, flanked by Doric pilaster strips and crowned consecutively by a dentillated cornice and pediment with raking dentil row. The cornice also wraps around the more utilitarian side elevations, which otherwise sport flat-headed six-over-six sash windows. Abundant ornamental ironwork, in the form of filigrees on the window shutters and colonial-inspired light fixtures flanking the door, are also notable. Proposals for a new home for East Aurora's municipal government date back to at least 1925, when a report by the state prison commission noted severe security deficiencies in the village lockup and recommended its wholesale abandonment and the construction of a new one, which of the local press speculated may come as part of a new Village Hall. The village board approved North & Shelgren's design in March 1928, with construction completed the following spring.
