Description
English: Head-piece to Numbers. Numbers cap 1 v 2: “’Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls.”’ Vignette with a pyramid of shields with images including sword, lion, ship, deer, serpent and lion – symbols of the tribes of Israel –amongst symbolic foliage and with an incense-burner above. The palm and the laurel are for victory, the oak for steadfastness. The idea is that the victories of the Israelites over the idolatrous Canaanites render honour to Jehovah. The print has letterpress in two columns below and on verso. 1791. Inscriptions: Lettered below image with production detail: "P. I. de Loutherbourg R.A. invt. et del.", "W. Skelton Sculpsit" and publication line: "London, Published Decr. 15 1791 by Thos. Macklin Fleet Street". Print made by William Skelton. Dimensions: height: 484 millimetres; width: 390 millimetres.
