Summary[edit]
DescriptionView towards the Menai Straits and Anglesey from Bryn Hafod-y-Wern Quarry - geograph.org.uk - 827541.jpg |
English: View towards the Menai Straits and Anglesey from Bryn Hafod-y-Wern Quarry Finished slate from the quarry was carted down initially to Porth Penrhyn for shipping and, later, under the ownership of the Royal Bangor Slate Company (1845-1884), to Aberogwen - where they were banned from storing slate by the Penrhyn - or the railway station at Bangor. The opening of the Bethesda branch of the L&NWR in 1884 came too late for the company. This image, taken at low tide, also gives an idea of how, before the construction of the Menai bridges in the 19tC, cattle were part-swum and part-walked across the Straits from Anglesey. The large area of exposed sand and mud is known as the Lavan Sands. |
