Summary[edit]

Description
English: British soldier in the ruins of Albert Basilica, France, during World War I. The ferocity of the fighting and bombardment endured by the small French town of Albert during World War I. Despite the terrible damage, however, there is an element of triumphalism about this photograph: the shot was taken after an Allied victory, and the British soldier posing with his rifle at the heart of the picture appears defiant and ready to take on any opponent.

Albert was the scene of two major battles during World War I. The first, between French and German troops in September 1914 ended in stalemate. The second, in August 1918, saw the Allies forcing the German army into full retreat.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. Albert as it looked half an hour after we pushed the Germans out of it. A view taken inside the Cathedral.']
