Summary[edit]

Description
English: Valentia Island Cable Station and residences The building with green trim was the cable station for the first transatlantic cable in Europe, connecting to a similar cable station in Heart's Content, Newfoundland. http://www.virtual-tours-newfoundland.ca/Hearts_Content/heart.html The Anglo-American Cable Co. opened the station on September 20, 1868, replacing the small temporary cable station in Foilhommerum, six miles west of here. Western Union International closed the station in 1966, with the loss of 100 jobs. It is now a factory. http://www.atlantic-cable.com/CableCos/Valentia

The building at the centre is a terrace of three family houses also opened in 1868. James Graves, the first superintendent of the cable station, and his family lived in the residence distinguished by the bay window from 1868 until 1909.

The building at the right is a terrace of six family houses built circa 1880. It housed married cable workers and their families after additional transatlantic cables were laid to Heart's Content in 1873, 1874 and 1880 and many other technological improvements were made that significantly increased the traffic handling capacity of the cables.
