Summary[edit]
DescriptionUkara cloth.jpg |
English: This is an 'ukara' (or 'Ukara Ekpe') textile from the Igbo culture. Ukara is designed with Nsibidi ideographic characters and is used strictly by members of the Ekpe society around the Cross River of South eastern Nigeria and South western Cameroon. Ukara material is woven by men in the Igbo-speaking city of Abakaliki, the designs are by men from Ohafia, Abiriba and Arochukwu, but it is secretly dyed by post menopausal women and openly by young males.
