English: Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska (June 7, 2004) - Ground Aviation Radio Repairman Lance Cpl. Russel I. Holmes from St. Helena, Calif., checks the wiring on the VHF AS 3900 antenna during Northern Edge 2004. More than 9,000 service members are participating in Northern Edge 2004. Northern Edge is Alaska’s premier exercise designed to practice operations, techniques and procedures, and enhance interoperability among the services. Participants from all the services, Airman, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from active duty, reserve and National Guard units are invited to participate. U.S Navy photo by Photographer’s Mate 2nd Class Katrina L. Beeler (RELEASED) The type of antenna shown is a high gain UHF turnstile antenna for satellite communication. It consists of two Yagi arrays mounted on a boom with its elements at right angles, fed in quadrature (90° out of phase), in front of a circular screen reflector. It radiates a beam of circularly polarized radio waves off its end, which is pointed at the satellite. Circular polarization is used for satellite communication since it is not sensitive to the relative orientation of the transmitter and receiver's antenna elements. |
