The mother, whohad but Httle mind, was the daughter of a most immoral and drunkenman, and had a brother who was an expert counterfeiter, two idiotsisters, and another sister—a moral imbecile—well-known in the under-world as The Infamous J. E. of P. Alburtus, the fourth-born, had two brothers and one sister, allthough physically strong, morally weak. During infancy and earlychildhood, he was suppressed and kept down, starved and neglected,with poor food and poorer hygienic surroundings. Case D.Idiot Savant. 129 IDIOTS SAVANTS 131 When he came under our care in his ninth year, a tall, pale, dark-haired, dark-eyed, delicate lad, with a record of frequent attacks of ca-tarrhal jaundice, weak lungs, weak morals, and defective nervous sys-tem, we classed him as a high-grade mental defective with many con-tradictions. Superficially affectionate, with but slight appreciation ofvalues, he would soon forget a kindness conferred, but at the same timehe would render willing and ready service if called upon. Given tointrospection, he had periods of dreaminess, enveloped in thoughtswhich he refused to divulge. Bright in many ways, he was both in-dolent and erratic; persistently headstrong and disobedient, particu-larly in trifling with fire, he was still appreciative of a trust committedto him and could be depended upon in an emergency.
