Description
English: A circa 1945-1955 image of Italian colonial Piazza Italia (1930s-1950s) - on the harbour in downtown Tripoli in the Italian Libya era.
  • The present day Martyrs' Square or "Maidan Al Shohdaa" , in independent Libya.
  • Also formerly named Independence Square (1950s-1960s), and Green Square or "E'saha ElKhadra" (1970s-mid 2011).
  • View is to the north, with the piazza's central fountain in foreground and the two monument columns on the end at Tripoli Bay (before 1960s landfills extended land far into harbour beyond).
  • The Ottoman era Red Castle (Tripoli Castle museum) is on the left, and former Italian era Teatro Miramare on the right.
