Description
English: The Forges de Mon Désir were built in 1745 under Governor Labourdonnais and employed around 790 slaves. Whe the forges went into decline and the property broken up, the Moulin à Poudre was built in 1776. Until the British takeover in 1810, the Powder Mills at Pamplemousses were the main supplier of gunpowder on the island, employing nearly 900 slaves. The site kept the name of Moulin à Poudre and during the 19th century served in turn as a hospital, a state prison (where the Prince of Kandy Ehelepola was held, a penitentiary, military barracks, orphanage, magistracy, district court and juvenile reformatory, and finally a leprosarium (in 1924). The site was declared a national heritage site in 1951.
Deutsch: Die Schmiede von Mon Désir wurden 1745 unter Gouverneur Mahé de Labourdonnais erbaut und beschäftigte rund 790 Sklaven. Nach dem Niedergang der Schmiede und der Auflösung des Landguts wurde 1776 die Pulvermühle (Moulin à Poudre) erstellt. Bis zur Übernahme durch die Briten im Jahr 1810 waren die Pulvermühlen von Pamplemousses der wichtigste Lieferant von Schießpulver auf der Insel. Rund 900 Sklaven lebten hier. Die Anlage behielt den Namen Moulin à Poudre, diente im 19. Jahrhundert aber als Krankenhaus, Staatsgefängnis (in dem der Prinz von Kandy Ehelepola gefangen gehalten wurde), Militärkaserne, Waisenhaus, Bezirksgericht, Jugendstrafanstalt und schließlich (ab 1924) als Leprosenanstalt. Die Stätte wurde 1951 zum nationalen Kulturerbe erklärt.
