Summary[edit]

Description
English: Subscription receipt for £15 to Mrs. McComb towards building a Coffee-House according on a Tontine Plan, issued in New York on May 7, 1792, signed in his own hand by David Grim, building's construction supervisor. In 1817, stock trading was moved from the Coffee-House to a larger building on Wall Street. The construction of the Coffee-House, overseen by David Grim (1737-1826), was financed by the sale of 203 shares of 200 pounds each to 157 members of a tontine. David Grim was also responsible for collecting the money from subscribers and paying the bills. Built in 1793-94, the Tontine Coffee-House served as a securities trading for the merchants of New York City, which later became the New York Stock Exchange. Shareholders in the Tontine were entitled to a division of profits from the building's operation. Upon the death of a shareholder, the profits were distributed to the living members.
