Timber Mountain, New Mexico, USA

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This image shows Timber Mountain, a peak in the Caballo Mountains of central New Mexico. The peak shows a succession of Paleozoic to Precambrian rock strata, beginning with Pennsylvanian Nakaye Formation forming the uppermost 200 feet of the peak, then Pennsylvanian Red House Formation forming the slightly less resistant beds at the first notch. Beneath these are Montoya Dolomite and El Paso Formation carbonate beds, then a thin dark band of Bliss Sandstone at the base of the cliffs. The slopes below are various Precambrian granodiorite or metamorphic rocks.
