How are you,dear child? he went on, putting hisarm affectionately round Hattas neck. Hatta looked round and nodded,and went on with his bread-and-butter. Were you happy in prison, dearchild? said Haigha. Hatta looked round once more, andthis time a tear or two trickled downhis cheek; but not a word would hesay. Speak, cant you! Haigha cried,impatiently. But Hatta only munchedaway, and drank some more tea. Speak, wont you! cried the King.How are they getting on with thefight? 138

Haigha and Hatta set towork at once, carrying round trays ofwhite and brown bread. Alice tooka piece to taste, but it was very dry. I dont think theyll fight any moreto-day, the King said to Hatta; goand order the drums to begin. AndHatta went bounding away like a grasshopper. 139
