Summary[edit]
DescriptionThemisto-Holman-full.gif |
English: Animation of two precovery images of Jupiter's irregular moon Themisto (S/1975 J 1/S/2000 J 1), taken by Matthew Holman using the 3.6-meter Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) on 6 August 2000. At the time, the moon was considered lost until its rediscovery by Scott Sheppard in November 2000. The official announcement of Themisto's rediscovery acknowledges Holman's observations of Themisto from August 2000. Each image was taken approximately 30 minutes apart, showing the moon's motion relative to the background stars. Jupiter is off the frame in this image, though its bright glare is visible at the bottom-right corner. The raw image datasets used are 545046p and 545051p. For comparison, the star field in these images can be viewed at the CDS's Aladin star atlas. |
