these marvelous ef-fects of light, and he painted just such things as he had seen,and nothing else. In each of his pictures there are particularpoints upon which to fix the eye; and though the wholeis painted with exquisite skill, and the smaller details bearexamination just as the blades of grass and the smallestflowers in a landscape do, we have no wish to examine them;the one great interest holds our attention, and we are satis-fied with that. The execution of the pictures of Rembrandtis marvelous. He painted some very ugly and even vulgarpictures; he disregarded all rules of costume and of the fit-ness of things in many ways; he parodied many ideal sub-jects, and he painted scenes from Scripture history in whichhe put the exact portraits of the coarse and common peopleabout him. But in spite of all these faults, his simpHcity,truthfulness, and earnestness make his pictures masterpieces,and we cannot turn away from them carelessly; they attractus and hold us with a powerful spell.

REMBRANDTS THE NIGHT WATCH chiaroscuro which he evolves, make of him as poeticalan artist as ever lived. All he needs to move you andmake you thoughtful for a whole day is an old man ris-ing from his armchair, and a star scintillating againsta dark background. These worthy Dutchmen have been provided by hisbrush with curled-up mustaches and beards, bristlingeye-brows, hands on hips, martial poses and hectoringairs. Never did condoUieri, landsknechts, or Stradioteslook more surlily grim; Salvator Rosas brigands looklike peaceful citizens by the side of these worthy militia-men. The drummer, in particular, is beating his drumwith relentless fierceness, while he casts glances fit tomake the earth quake with terror. On the other handnothing can be more engaging, more fair, more goldenthan the little maid dressed in yellow seen through analmost inextricable collection of legs and arms.
