remarkable that jewellery is not worn by Japanese women. Elaborate and good costume is not, however, to be found everj-wherein Japan ; and Miss Bird in particular found many localities where theRough men commonly wear scarcely anything, and the women onlycountrydress.p^^^ (3j^ a short, tight petticoat, or wretched tight blue cottontrousers, with a loose vest of the same material tucked into the band.In these cases it Avas often difficult to distinguish men from women, ex-cept by the eyebrows and teeth. The women usually carry naked babieson their backs. Marriages take place early, but by no means in infancy; bridegroomsare usually from twenty to twenty-one j^ears old, brides sixteen or seven-teen. It is only in modern times that the couple are allowed to meet THE JAPANESE. 393 before marriage. On the wedding day the brides trousseau is laid out forinspection in her new home, where the wedding is celebrated weddingat an improvised altar decked with flowers, and with images ceremonies.

Several of the ceremonies represent a sort of solemneating together by the bride and bridegroom, who also drink alternately,out of a vessel with two mouths, nine small cups of sake, the Japanesefavourite liquor (fig. p. 389). The bride now puts on the dress she hasreceived from the bridegroom, who in his turn puts on a special dressgiven him by the bride, and a full meal is taken. Various ceremoniesbetween the newly-wedded couple and the visitors follow, including thedrinking of nine cups of sake by every one present. Their attention to and affection for their children
