springs and winding brooks,under the shade of venerable oaks, parties of citizens and visitorsare almost constantly found engaged in every kind of rural enjoy-ment. A mile nearer the village is Brookwood Point, now asummer residence, in a majestic grove effectively developed bytasteful improvement. The large farm of Judge Nelson (SeniorJustice of the U. S. Supreme Court), lies between this and thevillage, and, like the adjoining lands, abounds in charming views. On the east side, commencing at the Susquehanna, the spaciouslawns and groves of Lakelands and the Bowers Farm andwoods extend northward on the lake for a mile, with an attractivelanding for Lakewood Cemetery ; then the varied shores of mingledlawn, forest, cliff and ravine of The Chalet, with a landing forLeatherstockings cave. A portion of thelake shore above this slopes in gentle lawns to the water, while inmost places, bold banks, dark wooded recesses and precipitous rocksform a foreground, east of which are found terraces fringed withforest and grove, bounded by steep hills, and commanding thosecharming views of the lake, its varied western shores and farms,and of the village whose beauties Mr. Cooper has described in theextracts already given. Our space will not allow us to go farther from the village in ourdetails, but the steamers and smaller lake-craft are daily makingthe circuit of a score of scenes of picturesque beauty and of classicassociation around the lake.
