THE CAPITAL. 159 some considerable distance from this position, threw a doubtupon the generally received belief, and made the true situationof the ancient Nineveh once more a matter of controveisy.When the noble sculptures and vast palaces of Nimrud werefirst uncovered, it was natural to suppose that they markedthe real site; for it seemed unlikely that any mere provincialcity should have been adorned by a long series of monarchswith buildings at once on so grand a scale and so richly orna-mented. A passage of Strabo, and another of Ptolemy,- werethought to lend confirmation to this theory, which placed theAssyrian capital nearly at the junction of the Upper Zab withtlie Tigris; and for awhile the old opinion was displaced, andthe name of Nineveh was attached very generally in thiscountry to the ruins at Nimrud. Shortly afterwards a rival claimant started up in the regionsfurther to the north. Excavations carried on at the village ofKhorsabad showed that a magnificent palace
