(PI. CXVII.,Fig. 2.) The fan carried by these attendants seems in most instancesto have been made of feathers. It had a shortish handle, whichwas generally more or less ornamented, and frequently termi-nated in the head of a ram or other animal. (PI. CXVIII.,Fig. 1.) The feathers w^ere sometimes of great length, andbent gracefully by their own weight, as they were pointedslantingly towards the monarch. Occasionally a comparativelyshort fan was used, and the feathers were replaced by a sort ofbrush, which may have been made of horse-hair, or possibly ofsome vegetable fibre.*® The other attendants on the monarch require no specialnot
