THE INFANTRY. 259 Among the foot soldiers of Sennacherib we seem tc find acorps of pioneers.^^ They wear the same dress as the betterequipped of the spearmen, but carry in their hands, instead ofa spear, a doubled-headed axe or hatchet, wherewith theyclear the groiuid for the passage and movements of the army.They work in pairs, one pulling at the tree by its brancheswhile the other attacks the stem with his weapon. After Sennacheribs tune we find but few alterations in theequipment of the foot soldiers. Esiirhaddon has left us nosculptures, and in those of his son and successor, Asshur-bani-jjal, the costumes of Semiacherib are for the most part repro-duced almost exactly. The chief difference is that there arenot at this time quite so many varieties of equipment, botharchers and spearmen being alike divided into two classes only,light-armed and heavy-armed.
