Text Appearing Before Image:
ed art, half Assyrian, halfEgyptian.-^s The theory is plausible; but upon the whole itseems more consonant with all the facts - * to regard the seriesin question as in reality Assyrian, modified from the ordinarystyle by an influence derived from Egypt. Either Egj^tianartificers—captives probably—may have wrought the bowlsafter Assyrian models, and have accidentally vai-ied the com-mon forms, more or less, in the direction which was naturalto them from old habits; or Assyrian artificers, acquaintedwith the art of Egypt, and anxious to improve their own fromit, may have consciously adopted certain details from the rivalcountry. The workmanship, subjects, and mode of treatment, are all, it is granted, more Assyrian than Egyptian,* theAssyrian character being decidedly more marked than in thecase of the ivories which will be presently considered; yeteven in that case the legitimate conclusions seems to bethnt tlie specimens are to be regarded as native Assyrian, Vol Fig 3.
