s.Tlie material used in its construction was burnt brick, theouter layer imbedded in bitumen, and the remainder in a cem-ent of mud. Externally the house was ornamented withperpendicular stepped recesses,^ while internally the brickshad often a thin coating of gypsum or enamel, upon wliichcharacters were inscribed. The floors of the chambers werepaved with burnt brick, laid in bitumen. Two of the door-ways were arched, the arch extending through the wholetliicknoss of the walls; it was semiciicular, and was con-structed with bricks made wedge-shaped for the purpose. Agood deal of charred date-wood was foimd in the house, prob-ably the remains of raftei-s which had supported the roof.^ The chambers at Abu-Shahrein were of sun-dried brick, withan internal covering of fine plaster, ornamented with paintIn one the ornamentation consisted of a series of red, black,and white bands, three inches in breadth; in another wasrepresented, but very rudely, the figure of a man holding a Plate XIII.
