r loyalty to Eliza-beth, without doubt built many hopes on the nearness of thechild to the throne. The Queen constantly varied in hertreatment of her young relative : now Arbella was pettedand made much of at court, now banished in disgrace toher severe grandmother, Lady Shrewsburys care. We have already detailed the somewhat complicated familyhistory of the Greys and Seymours. By the end of Eliza-beths reign the younger branch of the Tudors was repre-sented by the two sons of Catherine Grey and Edward Sey-mour, Earl of Hertford, and by the heirs of Catherines aunt,Lady Eleanor Clifford.1 Great, therefore, was the Queenswrath when, shortly before her death, a rumour arose at courtthat Arbella was privately engaged to one of the sons of Hert-fords heir, Lord Beauchamp. The tender age of the Sey-mour boys—Edward, the eldest, was only fifteen, Williamfourteen—makes this supposition appear improbable, to saythe least of it, except to the failing and jealous mind of the 1 See page 121,
