ones entitled The Medical and SurgicalHistory of the War of the Rebellion, in which other lines anddepartments of the Confederate States army, including theirorganization, acts and deeds, rank and file, field and staff, haveplace, giving records, reports, and facts, information relating tothe Confederate INIedical Department is scant and meager in-deed. However, during the past few years, through the or-ganization of the Association of Medical Officers of the Armyand Navy of the Confederacy, a few material facts have beenmade accessible to the future historian, from which, with myown personal observations, limited though they were, was ob-tained the subject matter contained in the following pages.* As the war dragged along, there was a greater want ofmedical, surgical, and hospital supplies among the citizens ofthe Confederate States in the territory not occupied by tlie * See also Appendix D for iiifonnation about the Organization andPer.sonuel of the Confederate Medieal Corps. COPYRIGHT, 1911, REVIEW OF REVIEWS CO. SAMUEL PRESTON MOORESURGEON-GENERAL OF THE CONFEDERACY Dr. Samuel Preston Moore served as surgeon in the old army for many years. At the outljreakof hostihties he determined to follow his native State of South Carolina, where he had been hornin 1812, and resigned from the army. He was almost immediately appointed surgeon-generalof the Confederacy by President Davis, and served in that capacity until the end of the war. Dr.Moore did much witli the scanty means to establish the (onfederate medical ser\ice on a surefoundation. Though occasionally stern toward an offender, his words of encouragement were neverlacking. Dr. ^loore was a man of commanding presence. During the years after the war hebecame a noted and much beloved figure in the streets of Richmond, where he died in 1889.
