At Cotgrave all the pots and pans of the neighbourhoodseemed to have been brought into requisition for the purpose of drowning Bentonsvoice while preaching. At Bottesford, under the shadow of the stately towers ofBelvoir Castle, Benton met with a rough reception. As soon as he began worship inthe open air the bells of the church were set a ringing, a dog-fight was got up, a bigdrum beaten, and various instruments blown and clashed. All this babel of sound andconfusion failing of its purpose, rotten eggs, filth, and stones were flung at the preacher,who nevertheless stood his ground.
