If, for the purpose of cauterizing, thestronger nitrate of silver suppositories have beenused, the patient feels, some minutes later, asevere vesical tenesmus and a stinging pain atthe neck of the bladder. A few hours later —sometimes, however, not until the next day —bleeding from the urethra ensues, sometimesslight, sometimes profuse. The urethra is verysensitive and micturition painful. The patientscrave the horizontal position in bed. If theheemorrhage be profuse, cold compresses mustbe applied to the perinseum. After 2 or 3 daysthe pain and desire to urinate diminish, and thepatient finds himself well, with the exception ofa slight urethral discharge which vanishes in aday or two.
