Capt. John L. Cantwell, Dear Sir:—Agreeable to promise, I em-brace this opportunity of writing you a fewlines to inform you of our safe arrival at thisplace, all well. We arrived about sevenoclock the evening of the day we left FortPulaski. We are camped about one mile fromthe town, three in a tent—the same tentswe lived in at Morris Island. LieutenantsHenderson, Merchant, and myself are together.Since we have been here we have had a verydisagreeable time. The weather has beenquite cold—we had ice last night and nightbefore from a half to one inch thick. Youwould be amused to see our chimney whichwe have erected to our tent. No news of interest. Givemy very best respects to Captains MacRae andCowan, Lieutenants Gurganns, Henderson, andChilds and all enquiring friends. My address 166

Beforetaps, every night, some of our comradeswould get together in one of the case-mates of the prison and sing the old fa-miliar songs of the South, seeming forthe time to forget the pains of retahationand their hunger. Some day I hope someof the noble six hundred will group to-gether the incidents as they come to them, and put them in shape for preservation—the amusing with the pathetic, for they 167 THE IMMORTAL SIX HUNDRED are all worth the keeping, and help to tel
