we yet find thatthe general character of the individual portrays plainly and indubita-bly the great general distinctive features of sex. One of the first and most striking differences to be observed is thatof stature. The bony framework of man is of a stronger and moreenduring make. Even the casement of the brain—the cranium, asscholars call it—is thicker, larger, and less pliant than in the female.The conformation of the female shows that she was designed for thelighter and more easy physical tasks of life. She should, it is true,toil and eat bread in the sweat of her brow, but not in the samesense as man. In an anatomical sense, the sexes each present several peculiari-ties. The human male is on an average from one third to one fourth Of Sex. 17 larger than the female. The male is also proportionately strongerthan the female, which would seem to indicate that man is to per-form the worlds drudgery, or more laborious work, and that woman isto attend to those lighter duties which are everywhere, in the mostcivilized parts of the world, chosen by her. Not only is she on alower scale than man, as regards ordinary physical power, but heranatomical conformation shows that she is not by nature so well cal-culated for locomotion or pedestrianism as man. Her chest is smallerin proportion, arid her hips are wider, for a manifest purpose; soliat she walks with a less firm and enduring gait than man. Womans brain, also, being relatively smaller than mans, wouldseem to indicate that the latter is to do more than an equal proportionof mental labor.
