Course.—The course of the disease is chronic. Frequently thesymptoms retrograde and there is an apparent recovery. The ascitesmay at times diminish, and again increase. The chronic formsunless operated upon lead to the formation of abdominal fistula?, toperforative peritonitis, to tuberculosis of the organs, and to amyloiddegeneration of the liver and spleen, with emaciation, exhaustion,and death. Treatment.—Laparotomy, when there is no advanced tuberculosisin other organs, is, according to Herzfeld, curative in 54 per cent,of cases.
