Summary[edit]

Description
English: The cross on Pride Hill The modern cross (1952) at the top of this busy shopping street replaced the earlier High Cross that stood here in past ages and was the site for proclamations and significant executions. A notice nearby states that David III, Prince of Wales, (Dafydd ap Gruffydd, last ruler of Wales) was hanged, drawn, beheaded and quartered near here in 1283 for high treason. In fact, Edward I, to make an example of him, had Dafydd dragged through the streets of Shrewsbury attached to a horse's tail then hanged alive, revived, then disembowelled and his entrails burned before him for 'his sacrilege in committing his crimes in the week of Christ's passion,' and finally his body cut into four quarters 'for plotting the king's death'. After the battle of Shrewsbury in 1403 the body of Harry Hotspur was placed between two millstones here before being likewise beheaded and quartered, along with three live noblemen.
