Description

Church of SS Peter and Paul, Swaffham, Norfolk, north chancel wall, chest tomb with recumbent effigy of John Botewright (d.1474), in clerical dress, with four shields bearing symbols of the Passion, Trinity and Botewright's rebus: 3 boats and 3 augers. "Cusped mid C16 canopy with tracery daggers in spandrels and brattished cornice". (Listed building text[1]). Four shields, left to right:

  • Three sacramental cups with wafers (Shield of the Blessed Sacrament)
  • Shield of the Holy Trinity
  • Three boats
  • Three wimbles; Farrer: "These last two form a rebus, wimbles (augers?) being instruments essential to a wright or worker in wood". (Farrer, Edmund, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol 1 (1885), p.96[2])
