These units are now used in pairs to handle thefreight traffic through the Belt Line tunnel. They are, ofcourse, of slower speed than those that will probably be em-ployed for the passenger traffic in and about New York City,and are of somewhat less power. The frame is sus-pended from the axle by very heavy leaf springs. The motorsare suspended by bearings on the axle and by nose suspensionat the free extremity. In the cab above, which is of very liberaldimensions, are arranged eight cabinets, the upper four con-taining the contactors, the lower four containing the resist-ances. In a central position on the cab and about 4 ft. fromeach end are located the reversing switches in cabinets. Ineither corner of the cab is located an air reservoir, and in theexact middle is the motor-driven air compressor.
