With occasional absences, Father Crespi remained atMonterey until his death, and as he watched his friendand superior he realized that he was working far beyondhis powers of endurance. He sometimes said so, butFather Serra always smiled and shook his head. I have come to California to save souls, would be hisanswer, as he kept on working. One of his plans was to build a line of missions fromSan Diego to Monterey, and to prolong it, if possible, toSan Francisco Bay. The missions were to be near enoughtogether to serve as shelters on the long journey from oneof these places to the other. He listened eagerly wheneverpriests, soldiers, or Indians told about beautiful valleyswith fine trees, running water, and fertile soil. He alwaysinquired if many Indians were near, for it would be uselessto establish a mission where there would be no converts.
