Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Spanning the arch between the nave and the chancel is a great beam known as the rood beam. It carries the figures ofJesus on the cross, with St. John, the beloved disciple, and St. Mary, Jesus’ mother. The rood beam marks the transition from the nave to the chancel.

Because of construction costs, Bertram Goodhue did not include the rood beam in his specifications. However, he was insistent that the church would nor be complete without it, and it was added in 1931. The inscription across the beam is from Isaiah: ‘He was wounded for our transgressions.” At the four ends of the cross are the sacred monograms, from the Greek ICXC (Jesus Christ), NIKA (victory) and INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). At the base, surmounted by a gold crown, is a shield on which are carved the Tree of Knowledge and the Serpent.

The chancel ceiling is divided into squares, with each outlined in a black-and-gold rope design. Each square contains a symbol (12 in all and repeated at random) portraying various events in the life of Christ.
Français : l'inscription ICXC NIKA signifie "Jésus Christ vainc".
