Description |
English: Satire on the installation of Lord Bute as a Knight of the Garter on 27 May 1762 showing the other knights and their chaplain seated at long table laid with dishes. They look askance at a disturbance to the left: Bute, in tartan, enters gesturing dramatically, two elderly sailors (probably intended for identiable admirals) raise their arms, an old woman (apparently black) thumbs her nose and with the other hand pulls the queue of a waiter's wig causing him to spill a dish; another man with his back to the knights, holds up a portrait of Pitt (Stephens suggests this is a mirror indicating that Pitt himself approaches). On the right at a separate table Lord Newcastle watches through his spy-glass (he had resigned as first lord of the Treasury the previous day giving way to Bute). On a balcony to left musicians play and sing; on the right ladies and gentlemen look on in astonsihment from separate balconies.

Licensing[edit]
This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
