heEmperor enjoyed being complimented on histaste. He liked to feel that great minds can stoopsuccessfully to occupy themselves with trifles. Hewas delighted to see his wife looking well in oneof his gifts. The hats always seemed to beholding the birthday reception; they filled theforeground to the exclusion of the other marvellousthings, diamond and pearl ornaments, jewels ofevery description, which His Majesty also showeredon the Empress with lavish hand. On the evening of Her Majestys birthday aperformance was usually given in the prettylittle Rococo Theatre of the Palace, built byFrederick the Great. Though the piece wasnecessarily simple, owing to the absence of up-to-date stage-machinery and accommodation forthe actors, yet the little theatre was the scene ofmany brilliant and pleasant gatherings. On one occasion the King and Queen of Norwaywere present at a performance there, soon aftertheir accession. They stayed some days at theNew Palace, of course with their little son Olaf,

The small boy came once ortwice with the Princess into her sitting-room,where he overwhelmed her with an avalancheof questions regarding her canary, pursuing hisinvestigations into the remotest details of its lifeand ancestry, and asking questions which no onecould reasonably be expected to answer. After the Emperors birthday the Season isin full swing. There are four State Balls andvarious Cours and Levees; but the Ballsare the chief events of the season.
