FIRST BATTLE AT FREEMANS FARMSeptember 19, 1777 SARATOGA. 32T quick burning flashes from a thousand bayonets.By noon the course of the British march and theirplan of attack had been fully deciphered, and theintelligence was carried to Arnold, who commandedthe left wing of the American army. Gates ap-pears to have been unwilling to let any of theforces descend from their strong position ; but thefiery Arnold urged and implored, until he got per-mission to take Morgans riflemen and Dearbornsinfantry, and go forth to attack the enemy. Ar-nolds advance, under Morgan, first fell upon Bur-goynes advance, at Freemans Farm, and checkedits progress. Fraser then, hearing the musketry,turned eastward to the rescue, while Arnold, mov^ing upon Frasers left, sought to cut him asunderfrom Burgoyne.
