Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Teresa Lerre (the girl looking at the camera) was a 5-year-old living at 1024 South 9th Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Teresa worked as a cranberry picker, as did her father and siblings (sitting behind her). The cranberry field they're harvesting in this image was in Whites Bog, Browns Mills, New Jersey. The girl walking towards the photographer was known as a "carrier." The children were still required to work in the cranberry fields even though Philadelphia schools had began four weeks prior. The Lerre family told the photographer it would be another two weeks before the job was completed.
