The Russian Ecclesiastical Mission at Beijing, c. 1840

Summary[edit]

Description
English: A Chinese-style courtyard in the Russian Offices (俄罗斯[南]馆, Eluosi [Nan]guan) in the former Rites-Bureau offices (会同馆, Huitong Guan) in the southeastern corner of central Beijing used by all tribute bearers during the Ming Dynasty but later given over to Russian management. The small Russian Orthodox chapel on the grounds is not pictured, but the embassy is nonetheless called a "convent" because its usual occupants between trade and diplomatic missions were solely ecclesiastical.

Cf. "The E-luo-ssu Kuan (Russian Hostel) in Peking".
