Dial-face with Lines of the Zodiac. Owned by Author. my collection. It is about ten inches square, offinest workmanship, dated 1812; a most attractivepiece of work. The dial on the church porch at i88 Sun-dials and Roses of Yesterday Eyam (facing page 64) shows the hnes of the tropicsand the equinoctial. On this page is given Captain Baileys fine dial,which tells the seasons. This dial exhibits beauti-fully, not only the comparative obliquity and direct-ness of the suns light,which is the primarycause of the seasons, butit also shows the rapidityof what in nautical termsis called the suns decli-nation and entry into thesigns of the zodiac. Asthe sun gets higher, thedials shadow goes down ;then it crawls from Can-cer up through Leo andVirgo to Libra, and so on.The signs of the zodiacare shown in bronze onthe pedestal of Mr. Reidsdial.
